Not every business needs GST registration — but registering at the right time saves penalties, and registering early can even help you win B2B customers who need your GSTIN to claim credit.
GST registration turnover limits
- ₹40 lakh annual turnover — suppliers of goods in most states.
- ₹20 lakh — service providers in most states.
- ₹10 lakh — special category states (North-Eastern and hill states).
- Note: these are aggregate turnover limits — all your businesses under one PAN combined, across India.
When registration is mandatory regardless of turnover
- Inter-state supply of goods (selling to another state).
- Selling through e-commerce operators like Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho.
- Casual taxable persons (exhibition stalls, temporary trade).
- Businesses liable under reverse charge.
- Non-resident taxable persons and input service distributors.
Documents you need
- PAN of the business or proprietor
- Aadhaar of the proprietor/partners/directors
- Proof of business address (electricity bill, rent agreement, or ownership deed)
- Bank account proof (cancelled cheque or statement)
- Photograph, and for companies: incorporation certificate and board resolution
The process
Registration is free and fully online at gst.gov.in: fill Part A of REG-01 with PAN, mobile and email; verify OTPs; fill Part B with business details and upload documents; complete Aadhaar authentication. GSTIN is typically issued within 7 working days if there are no queries.
After you register
You must issue GST-compliant invoices, file returns on time (even nil returns), and display your GSTIN at your place of business. BizGST Pro handles the invoicing and return-prep side from your very first sale — free to start.
